Building an Information products business

MAN WITH TELESCOPE

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king!

I was listening to a Jeff Walker audio as part of my participation in Product Launch Formula 2.0 and this quotable quote was thrown up. It’s one I have heard before and I feel is really important for any business owner to understand when considering making a move into online marketing.

For many traditional businesses which have a storefront and customers who walk through the door, their website is partly a branding exercise, an information repository, a mechanism to deliver promotions…that sort of thing.

SEO, link building, landing pages and the other “online marketing” issues are less important because awareness of the website is generated through awareness of the company, the business and the brand. The goal of the website to a large extent is to support the business.

What about Small Businesses without shop fronts or Services Businesses?

This is where the power of online marketing really works. Small businesses can compete on an even playing field with big business because size does not matter online.

Now to apply the quote about the one eyed man……

Many business owners..say consultants, or gardeners..whatever you do..who have a skill set or an intimate understanding of a specific niche have the opportunity to create an information product about their area of expertise and market it online.

With an understanding of the principals of online marketing, you have the opportunity to create a product and market and sell that product to a global market. And if you think “oh I’m not the best at this…and no one will ever buy off me…” that’s crap…remember…

If you know more about a specific topic than anyone else in the room then….you are the expert! You are the one eyed man in the land of the blind…

Now your website is the centre of all of your marketing activities. As no one will “walk pas t your shop front and pop in”, you need to understand how to apply:

  • Market research
  • Keyword research
  • Competitive Analysis
  • Product creation
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Link Building
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Analytics
  • Conversion
  • Copywriting

Just to name a few…..but if you get it right there is a real opportunity to build yourself a business with more flexibility that the typical 9-5 existence.

So, do you have an information business just waiting to be built? Don’t discount what you do or know..just change your perspective and start educating yourself about how you can make it a reality.
